Medwin, who died on May 1, 2024, had a distinguished career, representing both club and country.

Hailing from Swansea, Medwin made 30 appearances for Wales, notably scoring the winning goal against Hungary in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.

This victory secured Wales a place in the quarter-finals against Brazil, although they were eventually knocked out of the tournament by a young Pele.

His club career was equally illustrious. Medwin was part of the famous Tottenham Hotspur squad that achieved the league and cup double in 1961, as well as winning the FA Cup again in 1962. However, his career was cut short by a broken leg sustained while playing for Spurs in 1963.

Medwin began his career at Swansea Town in 1949 before joining Tottenham in 1956 for a fee of £25,000. He played alongside fellow Welshman Cliff Jones at White Hart Lane and was a pivotal player in Tottenham’s success.

Tottenham expressed deep sadness at Medwin’s passing, acknowledging his significant contribution to the club’s history.

After retiring as a player, Medwin went on to coach at Fulham and served as assistant manager to John Toshack at Swansea during their ascent from the Fourth Division to the First Division of the Football League in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Medwin remained involved in football throughout his life and was honored as a guest at the announcement of Wales’ squad for the 2022 World Cup.
