CJ Sansom, author of the Shardlake novels, Passes on at 71

CJ Sansom, the acclaimed author behind the popular Shardlake novels, passed away on April 27, 2024 at the age of 71 after a battle with multiple myeloma, a rare form of cancer affecting the bone marrow.

His publisher confirmed the sad news, revealing that Sansom passed away on April 27, just days before the release of Shardlake, the TV adaptation of Dissolution, on Disney+ on May 1.

Sansom was widely celebrated as one of Britain’s most successful historical novelists, gaining fame for his gripping mystery novels featuring barrister Matthew Shardlake set in Tudor England.

Throughout his illustrious career, Sansom garnered numerous awards, including the Crime Writers’ Association Cartier Diamond Dagger award for his exceptional contributions to the genre.

Maria Rejt, Sansom’s longtime editor and publisher, fondly remembered him as a talented writer who brought joy to millions through his novels. She highlighted his humility and dedication to his craft, noting that he always aimed for quiet publication without fanfare but took immense pleasure in the positive responses from readers.

Born Christopher John Sansom in 1952 in Edinburgh, Scotland, Sansom developed a passion for history during his academic years at Birmingham University, where he earned a BA and PhD in history.

After working as a solicitor in Sussex, he transitioned to a full-time writing career.

His debut novel, Dissolution, catapulted him to literary stardom in 2003, marking the beginning of the beloved Shardlake series. Sansom’s meticulous historical research and captivating storytelling captivated readers, with the series selling over three million copies worldwide.

Despite his declining health, Sansom remained committed to his craft, working on the eighth Shardlake novel, Ratcliff, until his passing. He leaves behind a rich literary legacy and a legion of devoted fans who cherished his work and admired his profound intelligence and sense of justice.

CJ Sansom’s final published novel, Tombland, continues to captivate readers with its compelling narrative and vivid historical detail, ensuring that his legacy as a master storyteller will endure for generations to come.
