Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has voiced his disapproval of the increasing reliance on Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the league.

He criticized referees for depending too much on VAR instead of making their own decisions confidently.

Halsey specifically questioned why VAR intervened to disallow a crucial goal in the recent Chelsea vs. Aston Villa match, arguing that the on-field referee had a clear view of the incident and should have made the call in real-time.

Although Halsey acknowledged that the correct decision was ultimately reached, he expressed concern over the process, stating that VAR should only be used to correct obvious errors, not to re-referee matches.

He emphasized the importance of referees making timely decisions during games to avoid controversies like the one seen in the Chelsea vs. Aston Villa match.

Halsey’s criticism echoes the frustration felt by Chelsea players and coaching staff over the disallowed goal, with midfielder Noni Madueke expressing disappointment and manager Mauricio Pochettino lamenting the negative impact of VAR on the Premier League’s reputation.

Pochettino suggested that the excessive use of VAR technology has harmed both his team and football as a whole, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to its implementation.
