Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley faces scrutiny from state lawmakers after a controversial traffic stop in April 2024, prompting Governor Kathy Hochul to refer the matter to the state Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct.

In the incident, Doorley was caught speeding in Webster and proceeded to her home despite being followed by an officer with lights and sirens. The officer attempted to stop her, as the refusal to comply was an arrestable offense.
Doorley, however, confronted the officer, invoked her position as the DA, and sought intervention from the Webster police chief.
Although Doorley was eventually ticketed for speeding and paid the fine, her conduct during the incident has raised concerns. Hochul criticized Doorley’s actions, stating that they undermined her responsibility as a district attorney and her ability to hold others accountable for violating the law.

In response to Hochul’s referral, the state Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct will investigate Doorley’s conduct. The commission has the authority to hold hearings, subpoena witnesses, and make recommendations regarding sanctions if prosecutorial conduct is found to violate state law or court rules.
While Doorley has taken responsibility for her actions in a statement, she has not addressed her conduct during the traffic stop. The release of bodycam footage further intensified scrutiny on her behavior.
Hochul’s decision to refer Doorley to the Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct underscores the importance of maintaining ethical standards among law enforcement officials. The outcome of the investigation will determine whether further action is warranted against Doorley, whose conduct has drawn bipartisan attention.
