Favour Ofili, a rising Nigerian track star, had an impressive performance at the LSU Invitational. She set a world-leading, all-conditions time of 10.78 seconds in the 200m, which would have broken Blessing Okagbare’s Nigerian record of 10.79 seconds, but it was not legal due to the wind speed.

Nevertheless, Ofili’s time is the second-fastest by a Nigerian female sprinter, behind Okagbare’s 10.72 seconds and ahead of Rosemary Chukwuma’s 10.82 seconds.

In the 200m event, Ofili matched the stride of the world-renowned sprinter Aleia Hobbs until the finish line, but Hobbs was given the win due to a faster reaction time of 0.002 seconds, despite both athletes clocking the same time.

Ofili also had a brilliant anchor leg run in the women’s 4x100m event, where she caught up to the top two leading runners to claim victory for the Tiger Olympians in 43.26 seconds.

Ofili has been in impressive form this season, starting with a 300m African record of 35.99 seconds, which broke Amantle Montsho’s 14-year-old record.

A few weeks later, she set the second-fastest 100m season opener by a Nigerian athlete, with a then-all conditions world lead of 10.85 seconds, all in her first season as a professional athlete.

The icing on the cake this season was Ofili’s legal 22.33 seconds win in the women’s 200m elite event at the Tom Jones Invitational, which earned her an automatic ticket to the Paris Olympic Games.

By doing this, she became Nigeria’s first female qualifier in the sprints and is poised for more success, including a potential Diamond League debut win to announce herself among the world’s best sprinters.
