Nigerian Navy Recruits 1,486 Personnel to Combat Oil Theft and Piracy, Minister Announces

The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, announced that the Nigeria Navy has recently recruited 1,486 personnel to strengthen internal security operations in the Niger Delta region.

Speaking at the Passing Out Parade of Nigerian Navy’s Batch 35 Trainees, Matawalle highlighted the rigorous training undergone by the recruits, aimed at equipping them to combat various criminal activities such as oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and piracy.

He emphasized the importance of recruiting personnel with strength, courage, and resolve to tackle security challenges effectively.

Matawalle mentioned that the newly enlisted personnel underwent extensive training in physical fitness, combat skills, and weapons handling, preparing them for both maritime and land operations.

Furthermore, Matawalle stressed the significance of recruitment in enhancing the navy’s operational capabilities, including the expansion of the naval fleet.

He disclosed plans to acquire additional vessels to strengthen the fleet, with expectations of receiving patrol vessels from Turkey and Fast Attack Craft from China.

Matawalle also highlighted the success of Operation Delta Sanity in curbing oil theft and increasing crude oil production.

He underscored the navy’s commitment to collaboration with foreign naval partners to improve local capabilities.

Finally, Matawalle urged the new recruits to uphold discipline, obedience, and loyalty to the military and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

He warned against acts of desertion and disloyalty, emphasizing severe consequences for offenders.
