In an Instagram post, the 38-year-old athlete shared her decision, expressing a mix of emotions. “The competitor in me always wants 1 more, but it’s time,” she wrote. “My HEART & body knew, but I needed to give my mind time to accept it.”
Parker, who had battled through numerous surgeries over her career, had hoped to play another season if she could recover from a foot injury that sidelined her last season. However, she decided against it, prioritizing her well-being and legacy in the sport.
“I promised I’d never cheat the game & that I’d leave it in a better place than I came into it,” she wrote. “I always wanted to walk off the court with no parade or tour, just privately with the ones I love.”

Parker made a significant impact during her tenure in the WNBA, notably with the Los Angeles Sparks, where she spent the majority of her career. She won two championships with the Sparks and added a third title with the Chicago Sky and the Las Vegas Aces in subsequent years.
Her accomplishments extend beyond the WNBA court, as she played a pivotal role in the success of the U.S. Women’s National Team, winning Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012.
She had surgery on her foot in July 2023 and told the AP it still pained her at the end of last year.
“This offseason hasn’t been fun on a foot that isn’t cooperating,” she wrote in her post Sunday. “My mission in life, like Pat Summitt always said, is to ‘chase people and passions and you will never fail.’ Being a wife & mom still remains priority #1 & I’ve learned that time flies, so I plan to enjoy my family to the fullest!”
As tributes pour in from teammates, coaches, and fans, Parker’s legacy as a trailblazer in women’s basketball remains indelible. She leaves behind a lasting impact on and off the court, inspiring generations of athletes to chase their dreams.
