Mr. Eze, initially a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), later defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2018.
He died on Thursday morning in an undisclosed hospital in Abuja following a prolonged illness, according to a former media aide who confirmed the news.
Mr. Eze, hailing from Umuida in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, was a trained journalist who ventured into politics in 1998.
His political career included serving as the pioneer Secretary of the PDP in Enugu State and later as the state commissioner for information and culture under Governor Chimaroke Nnamani.
He also served as a special adviser to Governor Nnamani before his election to the Nigerian Senate.

During his tenure in the Senate, Mr. Eze chaired several committees. In 2015, he contested the PDP primary for the governorship of Enugu State but was defeated by Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who went on to win the general election.
In 2018, Ayogu Eze switched to the APC, intending to contest the 2019 governorship election in Enugu State.
However, his name was omitted from the final list of candidates by the Independent National Electoral Commission, leading him to consider legal action.
Eventually, he heeded the advice of state leaders and refrained from pursuing legal action.
Mr. Eze’s death marks the end of a distinguished political career that spanned over two decades, leaving behind a legacy of public service and political engagement in Nigeria’s southeastern region.
