Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell was arrested in Detroit Lakes early Monday, April 22 2024 morning on suspicion of burglarizing a home, local police reported.

Authorities responded to a call at approximately 4:45 a.m. from a homeowner reporting a burglary in progress at a residence near Granger Road and Long Avenue.
Police discovered the suspect inside the home, identified as 49-year-old Sen. Nicole Mitchell, DFL-Woodbury, and subsequently arrested her on suspicion of first-degree burglary. Mitchell has not yet faced formal charges.

A spokesperson for the Senate DFL Caucus acknowledged the situation in a statement on Monday but refrained from providing further comment.
Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks, expressed shock at the news and emphasized the public’s expectation for legislators to uphold high standards of conduct.
He emphasized that consequences should align with actions both legally and within the legislature.
Mitchell, who also has experience as a TV meteorologist and a commander with the Air National Guard, was elected in 2022 and is currently serving her first term in office.
