Iraq’s military stated that there were no drones or fighter jets detected in the vicinity before or at the time of the explosion.
However, the militia organization involved, the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), attributed the incident to an attack.
This incident occurs against the backdrop of heightened tensions between Israel and Iran.
The PMF is an umbrella organization comprising numerous pro-Iranian militias, which form part of Tehran’s network of proxies utilized to further its interests throughout the Middle East for an extended period.

These militias have previously targeted US personnel and interests in Iraq multiple times, aiming to compel the remaining US troops to depart from the country. In response, the US has frequently retaliated against the militias.
The Pentagon, however, promptly refuted any involvement in this incident.
This incident occurs as the enduring confrontation between Israel and Iran has recently escalated into a new, more precarious phase, exacerbated by heightened tensions resulting from the conflict in Gaza.
