Former Wales winger Leighton James, known for his prolific career spanning more than 600 games in the Football League, has passed away at the age of 71.

James died on 19 April 2024, at the age of 71.
James, who earned 54 caps for Wales, played a significant role for clubs including Burnley, Swansea City, Derby County, Sunderland, Bury, and Newport County during his illustrious 19-year playing career.
Both Burnley and Swansea expressed their sadness at James’ passing, with Burnley’s chairman, Alan Pace, stating, “We are sorry to hear the news of Leighton’s passing. He left an indelible mark on this football club.” Swansea City described James as “one of the Swans’ finest players.”

Born on February 16, 1953, in Loughor, Swansea, James began his professional career with Burnley, eventually moving to Derby County and later returning to Burnley for a third spell.
He also enjoyed a successful period with Swansea City, helping them secure promotion to the top flight in 1981.
Throughout his career, James was known for his robust opinions as a media pundit and newspaper columnist. He also ventured into management, overseeing several non-league clubs in England and Wales.
