Chew passed away at the age of 66 after battling pancreatic cancer.

Chew was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023, and died from this disease in April 2024, at the age of 66.

Senator Melissa Wintrow (D-Boise) confirmed the news to KTVB, emphasizing Chew’s dedication to public service and her commitment to problem-solving.

Governor Brad Little honored Chew’s legacy by ordering the lowering of U.S. and Idaho flags to half-staff until sunset on Friday.

Little praised Chew’s passion and dedication, highlighting her advocacy for expanding the role of pharmacy in healthcare and her contributions to various healthcare policy issues.

Chew’s journey into politics was marked by her early experiences growing up in the Bay Area during the civil rights era. She later became an advocate for Idaho’s Asian community, embodying inclusivity and representation.

In June 2023, Chew announced her decision to step down from her seat and endorsed Natalie MacLachlan to run for Boise’s District 17.

House Minority Leader and Idaho Democratic Party Chair Lauren Necochea (D-Boise) remembered Chew as a beacon of moral clarity and compassion. Chew’s tireless advocacy for healthcare, labor, disability rights, and civil rights issues has left an indelible mark on the state.

Necochea stated, “Sue Chew was known for her moral clarity and huge heart for the people at risk of being left behind. She was deeply committed to inclusive representation and was a tireless door-knocker, always keeping in touch with her constituents and their needs.”

She continued, “The Idaho Democratic Party grieves alongside the many people Rep. Chew touched across her career, including advocates for health care, labor, disability rights, and civil rights. We will do our best to pick up the torch she carried and continue building a state with justice for every Idahoan.”

Representative Sue Chew’s legacy serves as a reminder of the power of dedicated public service and unwavering commitment to the well-being of all Idahoans.
