The EFCC’s move comes in the wake of a dramatic encounter at Bello’s residence in the Wuse district of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where EFCC agents attempted to effect his arrest. The former governor is being sought for potential arraignment on charges related to money laundering totalling N84 billion.
Despite the EFCC’s efforts, Bello managed to evade arrest when his successor arrived at the scene and facilitated his swift departure, prompting uproar and allegations of obstruction of justice from the anti-graft agency.
In response to the unfolding events, Bello’s Media Office condemned the EFCC’s actions, denouncing the allegations against him as a “witch-hunt.” They further appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and rein in the EFCC’s purported excesses.
