The Federal High Court in Abuja has set May 20 as the date to decide on separate applications seeking the restoration of the bail granted to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Additionally, the court will consider the application for Kanu’s transfer to another facility from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court originally granted bail to Kanu on health grounds on April 25, 2017. However, Kanu fled the country after the military invaded his residence, prompting him to evade arrest. He was subsequently re-arrested in Kenya on June 19, 2021, and repatriated to Nigeria, where he has been remanded in DSS custody.

Despite Kanu’s subsequent plea for fresh bail, which was rejected by Justice Nyako on March 19, 2024, the court has pledged an accelerated hearing of the case. The judge adjourned proceedings until Wednesday to consider the various applications filed about Kanu’s bail status and custody arrangements.
One of the significant requests made by Kanu includes a plea for house arrest as an alternative to detention in DSS custody. However, the Federal Government has refused this request, indicating its firm stance on maintaining Kanu’s current detention arrangement.
