Justice Emeka Nwite of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court granted the EFCC the necessary permission to arrest Mr. Bello on Wednesday. This decision sets the stage for his scheduled arraignment, which is slated for Thursday, April 18th.

The issuance of the warrant of arrest comes in the wake of a ruling by the Lokoja Division of the Kogi High Court, which had previously restrained the anti-graft agency from taking any action against Mr. Bello or infringing upon his fundamental human rights.

Efforts by EFCC operatives to apprehend the former Kogi governor at his Abuja residence proved futile, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours. However, reports indicate that Mr Bello was eventually whisked away from the scene with the assistance of his successor, Governor Ahmed Ododo, allegedly using the official convoy as a getaway vehicle.

Before these events, Mr Bello had appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and direct the EFCC against his arrest. He cited an existing court order that restrained the agency from arresting or prosecuting him pending the resolution of the substantive suit filed on his fundamental rights.
