Ian Parmenter, the well-known West Australian chef, broadcaster, and author, has passed away at the age of 79.

Close friends of Parmenter confirmed his death on 15 April 2024, marking the end of an era for the culinary world.
Parmenter gained national recognition in the 1990s as the host of ABC TV’s Consuming Passions, where he shared his love for food through 450 five-minute episodes aired between 1992 and 2001.
Born in London in 1945, Parmenter initially pursued a career in journalism on Fleet Street before moving to Australia. He joined ABC Perth in 1974, starting in various behind-the-scenes roles and eventually ascending to become a television producer and director.
However, it was Parmenter’s passion for food that truly brought him into the limelight.

Verity James, a former ABC journalist and broadcaster, described Parmenter as both a natural showman and a deeply introspective individual. She highlighted his charisma, compassion, and strong opinions, which endeared him to audiences across Australia.
In recognition of his contributions to the food and tourism industries as an event director, author, journalist, and broadcaster, Parmenter was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2011.
Reflecting on his life in Margaret River in 2017, Parmenter remarked on the vibrant community and energy of the region, underscoring his enduring impact on the culinary landscape and beyond.
