Meet Verne Lundquist, the Stalwart of Masters Coverage for Four Decades

Merton Laverne Lundquist Jr. is a retired American sportscaster known for his long career with CBS Sports. Lundquist filled in for Ernie Johnson Jr. as host of TNT’s coverage of the PGA Championship twice, in 2006 as Johnson was battling cancer and in 2011 when Johnson left after the second round following the death of his father on that Friday night.

After his return to CBS, Lundquist served as the long-time lead play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports’ coverage of college football on the SEC on CBS from 2000 to 2016. Lundquist retired from broadcasting college football games after calling the Army-Navy Game on December 10, 2016.

Verne Lundquist’s Early Life, and Education

Lundquist was born in Duluth, Minnesota. He graduated from Austin High School in Austin, Texas, before attending Texas Lutheran University (formerly Texas Lutheran College), where he was one of the founders of the Omega Tau Fraternity in 1958 before graduating in 1962.

The son of a Lutheran pastor, Verne Lundquist was born in Duluth, Minnesota, and graduated from Austin High School, before attending Texas Lutheran University from 1958-62. He began his professional career in sports broadcasting at KTBC in Austin before moving to Dallas, where he was sports director at WFAA for 16 years.

He had to go through multiple failed relationships before finding the one with whom he could spend his life.

A record suggests that he married Bette Lorraine Higgins in 1952 with whom he has a son named Vaughan Matthew Lundquist although the split and reason for it remains unclear. His other marriage was with Patricia Lundquist which could only last four years and the couple divorced in 1971. Just a year later, he married Kathy Vernon in 1972. They stayed together for eight years and then separated.
