Former Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at the age of 84 due to congestive heart failure and Parkinson’s disease, as announced by his family.

Described as an eternal optimist who deeply loved people, Wilson’s legacy extends beyond his tenure as mayor.
“As the eternal optimist, he loved people and they loved him back. We are honored that his memory will live on in the legacy he built as Salt Lake City mayor, through the countless people he has taught and mentored, his decades of humanitarian service, and his mountaineering accomplishments,” reads a statement from Wilson’s family.
“Ted’s lifetime priorities were his family and public service. He built and nurtured many deep and meaningful friendships and would remind us all to ‘never sweat the small stuff.’”

Wilson, a Democrat, served as Salt Lake City’s mayor from 1976 to 1985, leaving a significant mark on Utah’s political landscape. His daughter, Jenny Wilson, currently holds the position of mayor of Salt Lake County, following in her father’s footsteps.
In addition to his mayoral term, Wilson ran for the U.S. Senate in 1982 and for governor of Utah in 1988, contributing to the state’s political dialogue.
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall expressed her condolences to Wilson’s family, highlighting his role as a mentor and friend. Mendenhall emphasized Wilson’s significant contributions to the city’s history and his commitment to progress.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox also paid tribute to Wilson, acknowledging his lifelong dedication to public service and his prioritization of people over politics.
