Astor was a central figure in New York City’s downtown art scene during the 1970s and 80s.
Not only was she the founder of the Fun Gallery, but she was also an actress in underground films and an advocate for early hip hop culture.
Arriving in New York with dreams of artistic expression, Astor immersed herself in the No Wave film movement. Disenchanted by the mainstream art world, she co-established the Fun Gallery in the East Village in 1981.

This gallery became a hub for emerging street artists and graffiti creators like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, propelling their careers forward.
With its vibrant atmosphere and legendary parties, the Fun Gallery became a cornerstone of the downtown scene before closing its doors in 1985.
Astor’s impact transcends the Fun Gallery. She was a dynamic force who helped unite the art world with the burgeoning street art movement.
Patti Astor is survived by her husband, Steven Kramer, and other family members.
