Two major transport unions in Ghana, the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana and the Transport Operators of Ghana, have jointly announced an impending increase in transport fares, scheduled to commence on Saturday, April 13, 2024.

This decision comes amidst recent hikes in petroleum prices, prompting the unions to adjust fare rates accordingly.
According to a statement released on Monday, April 8, 2024, the fare adjustments include a 15% rise for short-distance or intracity transport, a 20% increase for intercity or long-journey transport, a 15% hike for taxi services, and an increment from GHC 10.00 to GHC 15.00 for short-distance taxi hire services.

The decision to increase fares stems from the perceived lack of government intervention in reducing the prices of petrol, vehicle spare parts, and lubricants, despite ongoing economic challenges.
The unions emphasized the need for Ghanaians to be aware of the fare adjustments and to cooperate with transport operators during this period of change.
“Given the prevailing economic difficulties and other factors affecting transport owners and drivers, it has become necessary to implement these adjustments,” the statement concluded.
