Jerry Grote, Mets Hall of Fame catcher and World Series champion, dead at 81

Jerry Grote, the celebrated catcher for the New York Mets’ historic 1969 World Series championship team, passed away at the age of 81.

He breathed his last on April 7, 2024, at the Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute in Austin, Texas, following respiratory failure after a heart procedure, as announced by his wife Cheryl on Facebook.

In her heartfelt post, Cheryl expressed her sorrow and gratitude for the support received during Grote’s battle. She shared the news of his passing, noting his fighting spirit until the very end.

The Mets also confirmed Grote’s demise at the Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute. Grote, a revered figure in Mets history, played a pivotal role in the team’s success during the late 1960s and early 1970s.

He was a cornerstone of the Mets’ memorable 1969 championship team and the 1973 National League pennant-winning squad.

Throughout his illustrious 16-year career, with the majority spent with the Mets from 1966 to 1977, Grote was renowned for his exceptional defensive skills behind the plate.

He earned two All-Star selections during his tenure with the Mets, in 1968 and 1974, and holds the franchise record for the most games played as a catcher.

Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen expressed their profound sadness at Grote’s passing, acknowledging his significant contributions to the team’s success and his enduring impact on New York City.

Grote’s legacy extends beyond his accolades on the field; he was revered for his mentorship of young pitchers and his ability to manage some of the Mets’ finest hurlers.

His reputation as one of the premier catchers in baseball history earned admiration from peers and fans alike, with Hall of Famer Johnny Bench once acknowledging Grote’s unparalleled prowess behind the plate.
