Born on January 26, 1930, in Detroit, Gumbleton was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit on June 2, 1956. He served as the 10th auxiliary bishop of Detroit from 1968 until his retirement in 2006.
Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron praised Gumbleton as a faithful son of the Archdiocese, revered by both clergy and laity for his integrity and dedication to the community. Vigneron expressed condolences, joining with Gumbleton’s family and friends in prayers for the repose of his soul.
