Auburn football legend Mike Kolen, revered for his formidable presence on the field and instrumental role in the Miami Dolphins’ championship victories, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at the age of 76.

The news of his demise was confirmed by his alma mater, Auburn University.
Known affectionately as “Captain Crunch” for his ferocious tackling, Kolen’s journey from a 12th-round draft pick to a cornerstone of the legendary Dolphins defense remains a testament to his skill and dedication.
Arriving in Miami alongside Hall of Fame coach Don Shula, Kolen swiftly secured a starting position and played a pivotal role in the team’s three consecutive Super Bowl appearances from 1971 to 1973.
Notably, he contributed 11 tackles and an interception during the Dolphins’ playoff run in 1971, showcasing his prowess on the field.

Throughout his tenure with the Dolphins, Kolen continued to excel, playing a key role in the team’s historic undefeated season in 1972 and their successful title defense the following year.

Following an illustrious professional career that spanned until 1977, Kolen retired from football, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
Prior to his tenure in the NFL, Kolen enjoyed a stellar collegiate career at Auburn University, where he earned recognition as an outstanding athlete.
In honor of his achievements, Auburn established an annual award in his name, presented to the Tigers player who leads the team in tackles each season.
