Ultravox star Chris Cross dies aged 71

Chris Cross, the esteemed bassist known for his contributions to the iconic new wave band Ultravox, has sadly passed away at the age of 71.

The news of Cross’s passing was confirmed by his longtime bandmate Midge Ure, who fondly remembered him as “the glue that held the band together.”

In a heartfelt tribute shared on the band’s Instagram account, Ure expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his friend and collaborator.

“Even after years apart, we managed to pick up where we left off like the years in between never existed,” Ure wrote. “You were the logic in the madness and the madness in our lives. It was great to know and grow with you. You are loved and missed old friend.”

Born Chris Allen, the talented musician reportedly passed away on March 25, 2024, although the news was not made public until April of the same year.

Ultravox, originally formed in London in 1974 under the name Tiger Lily, became synonymous with the new wave movement of the 1980s.

With Cross on bass, the band achieved remarkable success, producing numerous Top 10 albums and 17 hit singles. Their 1981 single “Vienna,” from the album of the same name, remains one of their most beloved tracks.

Fans and fellow musicians alike have been quick to pay tribute to Cross’s legacy. Messages of condolences flooded Ure’s Instagram post, with many expressing their sadness over the loss of a music legend.

“As a devoted fan of Ultravox, this is truly sad news,” wrote one fan, while another simply said, “Rest in peace, Chris, you are a legend.”

Journalist Alastair Coleman shared his devastation on Twitter, writing, “Devastated to learn of the death of Chris Cross, bass player from Ultravox. Rest in peace, guy.”

Artist James Tansley also expressed his grief, stating, “Such sad news about the passing of Chris Cross. He was an integral part of both incarnations of Ultravox and a great musician who will be sadly missed.”
