Tragic Loss: Stefano Cherchi, 23-Year-Old Jockey, Succumbs to Injuries Following Horse Fall

The horse racing community is in mourning following the devastating news of the passing of Stefano Cherchi, a 23-year-old jockey who tragically lost his life after falling from his horse during a race in Australia.

Cherchi, an accomplished rider with over 100 wins in the UK, was participating in the Affinity Electrical Technologies Plate at Canberra on March 20, 2024, when the horse he was riding, Hasime, fell during the race.

Despite receiving immediate medical attention at the track, Cherchi was later transferred to the hospital, where it was discovered that he had sustained severe head injuries and internal bleeding as a result of the fall.

The New South Wales Jockeys Association shared the heartbreaking news of Cherchi’s passing, stating, “With deep sadness, the Cherchi family have announced their beloved son Stefano passed away peacefully today. The family are very grateful for the love, prayers & messages sent by the racing community across the world.”

Cherchi’s success in the UK was notable, with the majority of his victories coming on horses trained by fellow Italian Marco Botti. Botti, deeply affected by the loss, described Cherchi as “like a son” to him and expressed his devastation at the tragic news.

The talented jockey made his British debut in 2018 and quickly made a name for himself, riding his first winner the following year aboard Withoutdestination at Wolverhampton.

Cherchi’s skill and professionalism earned him widespread admiration and respect among trainers and colleagues alike.

David Loughnane, one of the trainers Cherchi rode for, remembered him fondly, describing him as “an absolute gentleman” and expressing his condolences to Cherchi’s family and friends.

The British Horseracing Authority and the Professional Jockeys Association also paid tribute to Cherchi, expressing their sorrow at the loss of such a talented and beloved young rider.
