Paul Bence, Former Reading defender and Wokingham Town coach passes away aged 75

Paul Bence, a former defender renowned for his contributions to Brighton, Reading, and Brentford, has passed away at the age of 75.

News of Bence’s passing was announced on March 31, 2024, marking the end of a remarkable journey for the football icon.

Hailing from West Sussex, Bence’s football career saw him traverse various clubs, leaving an indelible mark wherever he went.

His time in Berkshire saw him don the jersey of Reading, where he made significant contributions, scoring twice in 14 appearances for the Biscuitmen between 1968 and 1970.

Bence’s journey began with Brighton, where he rose through the ranks before making a solitary appearance for the Seagulls.

However, it was at Reading under the guidance of manager Roy Bentley that Bence truly flourished, showcasing his defensive prowess and earning the respect of fans and teammates alike.

Following his tenure at Reading, Bence found a new home at Griffin Park, where he became a stalwart for Brentford, amassing over 250 appearances during his seven-year stint with the club.

His outstanding performances on the field earned him the coveted Players’ Player of the Year award in the 1972/73 season, a testament to his skill and dedication to the game.

Despite his departure from Brentford in 1977, Bence’s love for football never waned. He ventured into management, serving as player-manager for non-league outfit Wokingham Town before transitioning to coaching roles at Queens Park Rangers and Wycombe Wanderers.

Beyond his contributions to football, Bence found success in the brewing industry post-retirement. His enduring legacy was recognized in 2019 when he was inducted into the prestigious Brentford Hall of Fame, cementing his status as a revered figure in the club’s history.
