This election became necessary following the unfortunate passing of the MP and Deputy Finance Minister, John Ampontuah Kumah, on March 7.

In accordance with the party’s guidelines, aspiring candidates will have a three-day window, from Tuesday, April 2, to Thursday, April 4, 2024, to purchase and file nomination forms at the constituency party office.

A statement issued by the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, outlined the procedures and timelines for the by-election.

Aspiring parliamentary candidates are required to procure Nomination Forms upon payment of a non-refundable application fee of GHȼ3,000. Additionally, a non-refundable filing fee of GHȼ35,000 is to be paid upon filing the nomination.

However, special provisions have been made for Women, Youth (aged between 18 and 40 years), and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), who will benefit from a 50% rebate on the filing fees, reducing their fee to GHȼ17,500.

The timeline for the by-election process is as follows:
– Opening of Nomination: Tuesday, April 2, 2024
– Closing of Nomination: Thursday, April 4, 2024
– Election Date: Saturday, April 13, 2024

To oversee the process, an Election Committee (EC) has been appointed, consisting of various party members and officials.

While the Electoral Commission is yet to announce the official date for the by-election, only one candidate, Kwasi Nyantekyi, former Ghana Football Association president, has publicly declared interest in contesting to fill the vacant position left by the late John Kumah.

Per the provisions of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the Clerk of Parliament is mandated to notify the EC of a vacancy within seven days. Subsequently, the EC has either 30 or 60 days, depending on the circumstances, to conduct the by-election as stipulated by law.
