Back in 2006, during the inaugural season of the reality show, Ebuka found himself stepping into the spotlight, but it wasn’t part of his original plan. In a candid conversation on the Menisms Podcast, Ebuka reminisced about those early days.

At the tender age of 23, he stumbled upon an advertisement for Big Brother Nigeria. The show was still uncharted territory, and the concept of reality TV was relatively novel. Back then, it wasn’t even called “Naija”—that term hadn’t gained popularity yet.

Ebuka humorously referred to the housemates as “guinea pigs,” as nobody knew what to expect from the show. So how did Ebuka end up auditioning? Well, it all started with a dare from his sister. As a lawyer at the time, he had no grand aspirations for fame. But fate had other plans.

The allure of the competition, the prospect of mingling with beautiful ladies during auditions, and, of course, the $100,000 grand prize caught his attention. Social media wasn’t a thing back then, and newspapers still carried advertisements.

Ebuka decided to take the plunge, motivated primarily by the money. His plan? Win, head to Yankee (the United States), and pursue a master’s degree. As fate would have it, Ebuka didn’t emerge as the winner.

Yet, his life took an unexpected turn. Ebuka gained fame and realized that he wasn’t enjoying his career as a lawyer. Encouraged by compliments about his voice and looks, he started attending auditions and eventually landed his first job with NTA (Nigerian Television Authority).

The rest, as they say, is history. Today, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu stands tall as one of Nigeria’s most beloved media personalities.
