South African rapper Kiernan Forbes, better known by his stage name AKA, and his friend Tibz Motsoane, were tragically shot and killed outside a Durban restaurant on February 10, 2023. Recent developments in the trial of the alleged gunmen have revealed a possible connection with a prominent businessman.

According to court documents, a company owned by businessman Sydney Mfundo Gcaba, a member of a powerful South African family, transferred over 800,000 rand (equivalent to $42,000 or £33,000) to the bank account of one of the suspects on trial just a day after the murders.

The suspect who received the money, Mziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni, allegedly made a call to Mr. Gcaba before the transaction was completed. The prosecutor contends that the money was then divided equally among the seven suspects.

The prosecution suggests that the transferred money was then divided equally among the seven suspects. However, Mr. Gwabeni claims in an affidavit that he received the funds for consultation services provided to the company. However, the prosecutor argues that there is no evidence supporting this claim.
The Gcaba family wields significant influence in South Africa, including owning a taxi empire and several other businesses in the coastal KwaZulu-Natal province and across the country. The motive behind Mr. Gcaba’s alleged involvement in AKA’s murder is yet to be established.
