Five individuals stood trial in the Durban magistrate’s court for a bail hearing concerning the murder, which captured global attention and sent shockwaves throughout the industry.
AKA was fatally shot outside the Wish restaurant in Durban on February 10, 2023, a popular entertainment hotspot frequented by celebrities and nightlife enthusiasts.
During the court proceedings, state prosecutor Advocate Elvis Gcweka presented compelling evidence suggesting collusion among the accused.
Cellphone records indicated that Muziwethemba Harvey Gwabeni was present at King Shaka International Airport on the day of AKA’s murder, coinciding with the rapper’s arrival.
Further investigations revealed Gwabeni’s involvement in tracking AKA’s movements, including his presence at the airport and nearby Hilton Hotel, driving a BMW that trailed AKA’s entourage to uMhlanga.

The state alleged that Gwabeni orchestrated the assassination, assembling a team of gunmen and coordinating their actions to carry out the hit.

Despite Gwabeni’s claim of receiving a substantial sum, purportedly part of a business transaction, investigators suspect foul play and are exploring possible motives behind the killing.
While five accused individuals currently stand trial, two additional suspects, the Ndimande brothers, remain in Eswatini. The National Prosecuting Authority seeks their extradition to face charges alongside their co-accused.
Allegations suggest that the brothers received a significant portion of the payment for the hit.
Sunday World’s recent report unveiled Gwabeni’s ownership of high-caliber firearms, some requiring special licenses, and his admission to employing the accused in his security business, with several facing prior legal issues.
Inside the courtroom, AKA’s father, Tony Forbes, listened silently as the grim details of his son’s demise unfolded, while the accused individuals remained subdued, burying their heads in their laps throughout the proceedings.
As the trial continues, the public awaits further developments in this high-profile case, hoping for justice to be served for the beloved rapper.
