In an emotional interview with Vanity Fair, the 41-year-old actress disclosed that her first pregnancy “didn’t work out” during the run of a play where she had to give birth on stage every night.

The play, titled Grounded, featured Hathaway as a pilot who becomes pregnant and ran for six weeks off-Broadway in 2015.

Despite the personal turmoil she was experiencing, Hathaway continued to perform each night, concealing her pain behind the facade of her character.

During the interview, she shared that while she maintained a composed exterior during the show, she confided in her friends about her miscarriage backstage.

Hathaway emphasized the importance of acknowledging and sharing her grief rather than keeping it bottled up inside.

The actress, known for her roles in films like The Devil Wears Prada and Les Misérables, eventually welcomed her first son, Jonathan, with her husband Adam Shulman in March 2016.

Hathaway’s journey to motherhood wasn’t without its challenges, as she candidly discussed her fertility struggles.

In an Instagram post in July 2019, Hathaway announced her second pregnancy while also shedding light on the difficulties she faced along the way.

Reflecting on her decision to share her fertility journey publicly, Hathaway expressed her desire to break the silence surrounding miscarriages and infertility.

She emphasized the need to destigmatize these experiences and provide support for those who are going through similar challenges.

Following her Instagram post, Hathaway revealed that women would approach her, sharing their own stories of miscarriage and infertility.

She found solace in offering comfort and solidarity to others who were navigating the same emotional terrain.

Hathaway and Shulman welcomed their second son, Jack, in November 2019, marking a joyous milestone in their journey as a family.

The actress acknowledged the complexities of celebrating her own happiness while empathizing with those still grappling with infertility.
