Linda Bean, Entrepreneur and GOP Activist, Passes Away

Linda L. Bean, a prominent figure in Maine’s business and political landscape, has passed away at the age of 82.

Her death was confirmed by her business manager, Veronika Carlson, who shared the news on Sunday, March 24, 2024. While no cause of death was provided, Bean’s legacy as a dedicated businesswoman and philanthropist lives on.

Bean was deeply rooted in Maine’s heritage, being the granddaughter of Leon Leonwood Bean, the founder of the iconic outdoor retailer, L.L. Bean.

Throughout her life, she maintained strong ties to the company, serving on its board for nearly 50 years. Her contributions helped shape the company’s growth and success over the decades.

In addition to her involvement with L.L. Bean, Bean was a trailblazer in the Maine lobster industry.

She established lobster dealerships, launched the Perfect Maine Lobster brand, and owned various businesses along the state’s central coast. Her commitment to promoting Maine lobster led to the industry’s certification as sustainable in 2013, although it faced challenges in later years.

Beyond her business ventures, Bean was a staunch advocate for conservative causes and political activism. Her dedication to her beliefs earned her respect and recognition from both sides of the political aisle.

Republican U.S. Senator Susan Collins and Democratic Governor Janet Mills both expressed condolences and acknowledged Bean’s significant contributions to Maine’s economy and community.
