The sad news was confirmed by Abdallah Salifu, the Upper East Regional Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to JoyNews.
According to Salifu, Tia breathed his last at the Upper East Regional Hospital on Sunday, March 24, 2024.
John Akologu Tia, a prominent politician and former Minister for Information, represented the Talensi constituency in Ghana’s parliament from January 1993 to 2012.
Tia’s political journey began in 1982 when he assumed the role of Press Secretary at the Upper East Regional Secretariat of Peoples Defence Committees/Workers Defence Committees established by the Provisional National Defence Council military government.

In the 1992 parliamentary election, he was elected as a candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Throughout his tenure, Tia remained dedicated to serving his constituents, holding the Talensi seat from the inception of the Fourth Republic in January 1993.
Beyond his parliamentary duties, Tia was also a Member of the ECOWAS Parliament. His commitment to public service was further demonstrated when he was appointed Minister for Information by President Mills in 2009.
However, in 2012, Tia faced electoral defeat, losing the Talensi seat to independent candidate Robert N. Doameng Mosore. Following this setback, he decided not to contest in the parliamentary elections of 2016.
Tia’s contributions to Ghana’s political landscape extended beyond the confines of parliament. He served as Ghana’s Ambassador to Cuba during the tenure of former President John Mahama.
