The dismissal of Mizuhara, who has been an integral part of Ohtani’s entourage, came to light amidst reports suggesting that approximately $4.5 million (£3.5 million) from Ohtani’s bank account was transferred to a bookmaker.
Notably, Ohtani himself is not implicated in any wrongdoing related to the allegations.
ESPN reported that Mizuhara, the now-dismissed interpreter, confirmed the termination of his employment during an interview on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.
The decision to part ways with Mizuhara comes at a significant juncture as Ohtani, the baseball sensation, made his regular season debut with the Dodgers.
Responding to inquiries, a senior communications director for the Dodgers informed the BBC that they are actively gathering information and have confirmed the termination of Mizuhara’s contract.
While sports betting is legal in a majority of US states, it remains prohibited in California. Major League Baseball (MLB) also imposes strict regulations, prohibiting any player, umpire, or club/league official from betting on baseball games or engaging with illegal bookmakers.

ESPN’s investigation revealed that two payments totaling $500,000 each were made from Ohtani’s account to a bookmaking operation allegedly run by Mathew Bowyer in September and October 2023.
During his interview with ESPN, Mizuhara admitted to seeking financial assistance from Ohtani to cover his gambling debts. However, he later recanted, stating that Ohtani was unaware of the gambling debts and did not transfer any money.
Mr. Ohtani’s attorneys, according to the Los Angeles Times, have accused Mizuhara of significant theft. A statement from the law firm Berk Brettler indicated that Ohtani had been the victim of a substantial theft, and the matter was being referred to the authorities.
Shohei Ohtani’s presence in the MLB has garnered immense attention, especially after signing a landmark 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers.
Since his arrival in the US in 2018, Mizuhara has played a crucial role in interpreting Ohtani’s comments and has been praised for his ability to convey colloquial English expressions to Japanese media and fans.
