Varadkar revealed the surprising decision during a press conference in Dublin, on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 citing both personal and political reasons for his departure.

He expressed that part of leadership involves recognizing when it’s time to pass on the baton to someone else and having the courage to do so.

The 45-year-old politician, who served as taoiseach between 2017 and 2020, and again since December 2022, highlighted that his successor as Fine Gael leader would also assume the role of taoiseach.

He emphasized that the new leadership would be better positioned to drive policies, implement strategies, and lead the country forward.

Varadkar’s tenure as taoiseach was notable for several reasons, including his role in rallying EU support for the Brexit backstop mechanism to prevent a hard border on the island of Ireland. He also played a significant part in the 2018 referendum that legalized abortion, marking a significant shift in Ireland’s social landscape.

During his announcement, Varadkar reflected on his time in office, describing it as the most fulfilling period of his life. He cited achievements such as advancing LGBTQ+ and abortion rights and reaffirmed Ireland’s commitment to welcoming refugees, particularly amid the crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

While Varadkar’s resignation marks the end of his leadership, he expressed confidence in the future of the country and the government’s ability to continue progress on key issues. His departure does not trigger a general election, with his successor expected to assume office without the need for nationwide polls.
