His son, director Brandon Camp, confirmed the news, stating that Camp had succumbed to an unspecified illness. The announcement was made via various media outlets, including the New York Times.

Camp’s wife, Kathleen, shared a heartfelt message on Facebook alongside a photo of her late husband, bidding him farewell with the words, “Fly free my sweetie!”

A graduate of the University of Mississippi, Camp established his own Dallas-based film company, Mulberry Square Production, in 1971. It was through this venture that he brought the original “Benji” movie to life.

Despite facing rejection from major Hollywood studios, Camp persisted and raised $500,000 to produce the film.

Shot primarily in McKinney, Texas, the 1974 movie captured the hearts of audiences worldwide and grossed an impressive $45 million at the box office. The film’s theme song, “I Feel Love” by Charlie Rich, even received an Academy Award nomination.

Speaking about the unique perspective of the film, Camp once said, “Nobody has ever done a movie like this because it’s from the dog’s point of view.”

The iconic canine star of the film, Higgins, was discovered by renowned animal trainer Frank Inn at a California animal shelter.

Following the success of the original “Benji,” Camp continued to expand the franchise with more films, including a 2018 reboot co-written by Camp himself and directed by his son, Brandon.

Last year, the city of McKinney commemorated the 50th anniversary of the movie by hosting a parade and unveiling a sculpture of Benji at Mitchell Park.

Remembering Camp’s contributions, the USA Film Festival, a Dallas-based nonprofit organization, described him as a “longtime supporter and friend.” Despite the challenges of working with animals in the film industry, Camp’s dedication and creativity gave rise to a beloved canine star and a cherished film legacy.

“Our thoughts are with Joe’s family and many friends during this time,” the organization expressed in a tribute to Camp’s enduring impact.
