McAuley’s body was found at his home on March 18, 2024, at the age of 59. Authorities suspect that he passed away from natural causes several days before his body was discovered.
The notorious figure, who had a tumultuous history with the law, gained infamy for his involvement in several violent crimes.
In 1996, McAuley was convicted for his role in the killing of Detective Garda Jerry McCabe during an armed robbery. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison but was released in 2009 after serving 10 years.
Despite his criminal past, Sinn Féin stood by McAuley and three other IRA members involved in the McCabe killing, advocating for their early release under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement, despite opposition from the Irish government.

Following his release, McAuley’s life took another dark turn when he brutally attacked his ex-wife, Sinn Féin TD Pauline Tully, in 2014, stabbing her 13 times. McAuley was subsequently imprisoned for the assault.
McAuley’s criminal history also includes a daring escape from Brixton Prison in London in 1991, where he fled to the Republic of Ireland. Despite this escape, authorities did not seek his extradition after his release for the McCabe killing.
Throughout his tumultuous life, McAuley experienced both support and disavowal from various factions. He is survived by his ex-wife, Pauline Tully, and their two children.
