Led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court issued its ruling, rejecting Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ certiorari application challenging a damning 2023 High Court judgment.
This decision comes after a period of deferral following the initial pronouncement of the 3-2 majority verdict.
At the heart of the matter is Anas’ defamation lawsuit against Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong.
The High Court previously ruled in favor of Agyapong, characterizing Anas’ investigative journalism style as “investigative terrorism” rather than legitimate journalism.

In response to the High Court’s decision, Anas sought redress at the Supreme Court, raising concerns about the jurisdiction of the judge and the possibility of bias.
However, the Supreme Court’s ruling affirms the lower court’s decision, marking a significant setback for Anas in his legal battle.
The verdict signals a pivotal moment in the protracted legal feud between Anas and Kennedy Agyapong, which dates back to 2018.
Justices Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu and Samuel Asiedu aligned with Chief Justice Torkornoo in rejecting Anas’ appeal, while Justices Issifu Omoro Tanko Amadu and Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi dissented.
