The Los Angeles Chargers have parted ways with wide receiver Mike Williams, according to reports from NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, sourced by individuals close to the situation.

The team later confirmed the news, signaling the end of Williams’ seven-year tenure with the franchise.
Williams, who was in the final year of a hefty three-year, $60 million contract signed in 2022, was slated to count a substantial $32.46 million against the team’s salary cap for the 2024 season.
By releasing him, the Chargers stand to save a significant $20 million against the cap.
While the Chargers have expressed interest in potentially bringing Williams back, it’s anticipated that the wide receiver will explore his options in the free-agent market.

Despite battling injuries that sidelined him for 18 games over the past two seasons, Williams has showcased his prowess as a dynamic field-stretching force with an imposing size-speed combination that poses challenges for opposing defenses.
However, Williams’ availability has been a concern, particularly in recent seasons. Limited to just three games in 2023 due to a torn ACL and missing multiple games in 2022, he has struggled to stay on the field consistently.
Despite his injury setbacks, Williams has demonstrated his ability to make explosive plays when active, leading the NFL with an impressive 15.8 yards per reception since 2018.
The Chargers offense noticeably felt the absence of Williams’ big-play capabilities, making his departure a significant loss for the team. However, given the financial implications of his contract and the team’s cap constraints, the decision to release him became a necessary one.
