Lily Allen Shares How Parenthood ” Ruined” Her Music Career

In a candid conversation on the “Radio Times” podcast, Lily Allen, the renowned British pop star, shared how becoming a mother changed the trajectory of her music career.

During the episode aired on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, Allen didn’t mince words as she humorously remarked, “I never really have a strategy when it comes to career, but yes, my children ruined my career. I love them and they complete me, but in terms of pop stardom, totally ruined it.”

Despite her light-hearted tone, Allen elaborated on the challenges of balancing motherhood with her music career. “It really annoys me when people say you can have it all, because — quite frankly — you can’t,” she added.

The 38-year-old artist shares two children, Ethel Mary and Marnie Rose, aged 12 and 11 respectively, with her former husband, Sam Cooper.

Reflecting on her decision to prioritize her children, Allen drew from her own upbringing, emphasizing the importance of being present for her kids.

“Some people choose their career over their children, and that’s their prerogative,” Allen said. “My parents were quite absent when I was a kid, and I feel like that really left some nasty scars that I’m not willing to repeat on mine.”

Expressing pride in her children’s upbringing, Allen remarked, “I’m glad that I have done that, because I think they’re pretty well-rounded people.”

While Allen has taken a step back from music in recent years, she remains creatively active. She announced the launch of her podcast, “Miss Me?,” scheduled to premiere on Thursday.

Although her latest album, “No Shame,” was released in 2018, Allen hinted at new projects, including a concept album and “two musicals.”

Additionally, she has ventured into acting, earning a nomination for best actress at the 2022 Olivier Awards for her performance in “2:22 Ghost Story.”

In 2020, Allen tied the knot with “Stranger Things” actor David Harbour, and the couple resides in New York City.
