In a strategic move aimed at fortifying their roster for the future, the Carolina Panthers have made the decision to part ways with pass-rusher Brian Burns, sending him to the New York Giants in exchange for valuable draft picks.

According to reports from various sources, including the NFL Network, the Panthers finalized a trade deal with the Giants on Monday, March 11, 2024.

As per the terms of the agreement, the Panthers will receive two draft picks from the Giants: this year’s second-rounder and a fifth-rounder in 2025.

While the deal has been agreed upon, it cannot be officially completed until Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at 4 p.m., marking the beginning of the new league year.

The decision to trade Burns comes after the Panthers placed the franchise tag on him earlier this month. Despite discussions between the team and Burns’ representatives regarding a potential contract extension, no agreement was reached.

This development echoes previous efforts to secure Burns on a long-term basis, which were unsuccessful last summer.

With the addition of the draft picks acquired from the Giants, the Panthers bolster their resources for the upcoming NFL Draft. They now possess a total of seven selections, including the 33rd and 39th overall picks in what is considered a deep draft class across multiple positions.

Moreover, the trade frees up approximately $24 million in salary cap space for the Panthers, providing them with additional flexibility to address their defensive needs and potentially pursue other acquisitions.

In a related development, reports emerged on Monday of linebacker Frankie Luvu reaching a deal with the Washington Football Team.

Burns, a first-round draft pick for the Panthers in 2019, leaves behind a notable legacy in Carolina. Over five seasons with the team, he amassed an impressive 46.0 sacks and earned two Pro Bowl selections, establishing himself as a formidable force on the field.
