The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has decided to retract his comments regarding the NDC’s running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, following a debate on the State of the Nation address.

During the debate, the Minority caucus expressed strong disapproval of the Majority Leader’s remarks suggesting that Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, a woman in her 70s, being chosen as the NDC’s running mate indicated a lack of forward-thinking leadership and succession planning within the party.
Initially, the Majority Leader resisted calls from the minority caucus to withdraw his statement, leading to a heated exchange that disrupted the proceedings.

This ultimately led to the suspension of the house’s activities by the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrew Asiamah Amoako.
After reconsidering his words, Mr. Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the concerns raised by his colleagues regarding age and clarified his intention. He stated, “Colleagues raised valid points about age.
My intention was to highlight a perceived lack of clear succession planning within our opponents rather than criticize their running mate based on age.
Therefore, I retract that specific aspect of my earlier statement that referenced her age as a focal point of my argument.”
