In the wake of the tragic passing of John Ampontuah Kumah, former Deputy Finance Minister of Ghana, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Caucus of Constituency Chairmen has issued a strong statement urging the Ghana Police Service and National Security to take swift action against individuals who have made public claims regarding the circumstances surrounding Kumah’s death.

The statement, dated March 11, highlights the concerns of the Caucus regarding certain individuals in the media who have allegedly made unsubstantiated claims about Kumah’s demise. The Caucus emphasizes the need for a thorough investigation, particularly as these claims have surfaced before an official autopsy report has been released.

Abraham Kofi Oduro-Kyeremateng, Secretary of the Ashanti Regional Caucus of Constituency Chairmen, underscored the seriousness of the situation, labeling the claims as “criminal allegations” that warrant immediate attention from law enforcement agencies. The Caucus is calling for the arrest of individuals who have purportedly asserted knowledge about the circumstances of Kumah’s death to assist in the investigation.

Moreover, the statement expresses concern over the potential damage these allegations could inflict on the NPP, especially as the country approaches the December 7 elections. The Caucus warns against the dangers of allowing such unsubstantiated claims to spread, emphasizing the need for unity and stability within the party during this critical period.

Of particular concern to the Caucus is the role played by certain media outlets and personalities in disseminating these claims. The statement calls upon Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who owns Wontumi Media, to intervene and ensure that his media outfit refrains from spreading baseless allegations that could sow discord within the party.

In addition to condemning the actions of individuals spreading rumors, the Caucus also addresses the issue of internal party dynamics. They reject any attempts by media personalities, such as Oheneba Nana Asiedu, to exert influence over internal party decisions, emphasizing the importance of separating media work from party affairs.

The statement concludes with a reaffirmation of the Caucus’s dedication to supporting the NPP’s goals in the Ashanti Region and a call for all party members to focus on the task at hand: ensuring success in the upcoming elections.

While mourning the loss of a respected party member, the NPP Ashanti Regional Caucus’s call for a thorough investigation into John Kumah’s death reflects a commitment to upholding the rule of law and preserving the integrity of the party. As Ghana continues its democratic journey, allegations of this nature must be handled with the utmost seriousness and diligence.
