Robert Downey Jr. Wins First Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in “Oppenheimer”

Hollywood veteran Robert Downey Jr. clinched his maiden Oscar victory at the 96th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, triumphing in the Best Supporting Actor category for his compelling portrayal in “Oppenheimer.”

In Christopher Nolan’s biographical drama, Downey Jr. embodies the character of Lewis Strauss, the formidable adversary of J. Robert Oppenheimer, portrayed by Cillian Murphy.

This achievement marks Downey Jr.’s inaugural Oscar win, following previous nominations for Best Actor in 1993’s “Chaplin” and Best Supporting Actor in 2009’s “Tropic Thunder.”

The actor’s stellar performance garnered widespread acclaim and established him as the frontrunner for the coveted award, building on his victories at major ceremonies such as the Golden Globe, Bafta, and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Overcoming stiff competition from esteemed actors like Robert De Niro, Ryan Gosling, and Mark Ruffalo, Downey Jr. emerged triumphant on Hollywood’s biggest night.

In his acceptance speech, Downey Jr. humorously acknowledged his unconventional path to success, quipping, “I thank my terrible childhood and the Academy, in that order.”

He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his wife, Susan Downey, affectionately referring to her as his “veterinarian…sorry…wife,” and credited her for his personal and professional rejuvenation.

Revealing a poignant revelation, Downey Jr. shared, “I stand here before you a better man because of it,” referring to his transformative journey through the role.

With humility and sincerity, the acclaimed actor conveyed his deep appreciation for the opportunity and the profound impact it has had on his life.
