Welsh comedian Rhod Gilbert’s battle with throat, neck, tongue, and tonsil cancer in 2022 was marked by what he described as “brutal” treatment.

However, the therapy that he underwent, while challenging, ultimately saved his life. His journey through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery has shed light on the harsh realities of cancer treatment, particularly for head and neck cancer patients.
Prof Mererid Evans, head and neck specialist at Velindre Cancer Centre in Cardiff, played a pivotal role in Rhod’s treatment. Her expertise and dedication to improving cancer treatment through research have been instrumental in providing hope to patients like Rhod.
The Channel 4 documentary, “A Pain in the Neck for SU2C,” followed Rhod’s journey, offering viewers a glimpse into the grueling process of cancer treatment. Through his experience, Rhod aimed to raise awareness and highlight the challenges faced by cancer patients undergoing treatment.

Rhod’s treatment regimen included radiotherapy and chemotherapy, a combination that Prof Evans described as particularly difficult for head and neck cancer patients.

The aggressive nature of the treatment often leads to debilitating side effects, including mouth ulcers, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, and fatigue.
Speaking to BBC Wales, Prof Evans explained the toll that treatment takes on patients: “Radiotherapy to the head and neck does cause some swelling and inflammation within the voice box…It’s not uncommon that people develop a hoarse voice during treatment, and that doesn’t always improve.”
For Rhod, whose career relies heavily on his voice as a stand-up comedian, the fear of losing his voice was a significant concern. As he candidly expressed in the documentary, the treatment could potentially save his life but jeopardize his career.
Despite the challenges, Rhod received his first all-clear scan in October 2023, marking a significant milestone in his journey to recovery. His resilience and determination to overcome cancer have inspired many and underscored the importance of early detection and access to quality treatment.
