Dr. Kumah reportedly passed away in the early hours of Thursday, March 7, after a brief illness, leaving behind a deep sense of loss among his colleagues and constituents.

Upon receiving news of Dr. Kumah’s demise, Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, called for a 10-minute recess to allow members to process the shocking news.

However, the break, initially slated for 10 minutes, was extended to approximately 30 minutes as members grappled with the weight of the loss.

When the session resumed, it became evident that many legislators were profoundly affected by the news, making it difficult to continue with the scheduled debate on President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address.

Despite efforts to proceed with parliamentary business, the atmosphere in the chamber remained somber and subdued.

Recognizing the emotional strain on members, Speaker Bagbin made the decision to limit parliamentary proceedings to addressing a single question related to the ongoing debate. However, it became apparent that the House was not in a suitable state to engage in substantive discussions.

In light of this, a legislator proposed that Parliament adjourn its session, citing the need for MPs to properly grieve and pay tribute to their departed colleague. Speaker Bagbin, acknowledging the sentiment of the House, formally adjourned proceedings until Friday, March 8, at 10 am.

Dr. John Kumah’s passing has cast a pall over Parliament, as colleagues mourn the loss of a dedicated public servant and esteemed member of the legislative body. As the nation mourns his untimely departure, tributes pour in for Dr. Kumah, reflecting the profound impact he had on his constituency and the nation as a whole.
