Renowned manga artist Akira Toriyama, best known as the creator of Dragon Ball, has passed away at the age of 68.

According to an announcement on the Dragon Ball website, Toriyama died on March 1, 2024, with only close family and a few friends in attendance at his funeral.
The cause of death was cited as acute subdural hematoma, a type of bleeding near the brain, his studio confirmed on Friday, March 8, 2024.
“Though he had much more to achieve, Akira Toriyama leaves behind a legacy of manga titles and artistic works,” the statement from his studio expressed. “We hope that his unique world of creation continues to be cherished by fans for years to come.”
Fans around the world expressed their condolences on social media, with many acknowledging Toriyama’s significant impact on their lives through his creations.

Born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1955, Toriyama rose to prominence in the early 1980s with his manga series Dr. Slump, featuring the adventures of a little girl robot named Arale and her inventor.
However, it was Dragon Ball that catapulted Toriyama to international fame. The series, chronicling the journey of Son Goku from a martial arts novice to a legendary hero, resonated deeply with fans worldwide.
Toriyama’s creation inspired countless fan adaptations, including fan fiction and cosplay, and Dragon Ball merchandise became ubiquitous in toy stores across Asia.
In a 2013 interview with the Japanese newspaper Asahi, Toriyama expressed his surprise at the global success of Dragon Ball, describing it as a “miracle.” He credited the series with helping him navigate his own personal struggles and find acceptance in society.
