The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Garvey in the first round of the 1968 Major League Baseball Draft. He debuted in the Major Leagues on September 1, 1969, at the age of twenty.
Garvey stated on October 10, 2023, that he would run as a Republican in the 2024 US Senate election in California. Garvey got the most votes in the partial term special election primary to replace Laphonza Butler and fill the vacancy caused by Dianne Feinstein, which concludes in January 2025.
