As a patrol officer, Gascón enlisted in the Los Angeles Police Department in 1978. He served in the LAPD for three years before going back to work in business management.
Gascón applied in 2002 to become the Chief of Police of the Los Angeles Police Department. His goal was to lower California’s recidivism rate among ex-offenders by collaborating with community agencies. The Chief of Police position was eventually given to William Bratton.

Is George Gascon a Democrat or Republican?
Now we have Nathan Hochman, a highly respected former assistant U.S. attorney general and L.A. Ethics Commission president, running against incumbent George Gascón for district attorney.
Gascón has received votes of no confidence from 37 cities. Many deputy district attorneys and deputy sheriffs supported an attempt to recall him.
However, as Hochman was once a Republican, the local Democratic Party endorsed Gascón.
