Los Angeles County’s district attorney, George Gascón, is an American lawyer and former police officer. From 2011 until 2019, Gascón—a former Republican and member of the Democratic Party—held the office of San Francisco district attorney.

Gascón began working as a patrol officer with the Los Angeles Police Department in 1978. He rejoined the LAPD and worked in business management for three years.
Gascón applied to be Chief of Police of the Los Angeles Police Department in 2002. His goal was to lower the recidivism rate among California’s jail population by collaborating with community agencies. In the end, William Bratton was named Chief of Police.
